1993 Backpack South to North Lake

For this backpacking adventure, we decide to tackle one of the iconic Sierra Nevada routes: South Lake to North Lake. This is a 56-mile horseshoe-shaped loop beginning at South Lake near Parcher’s Resort and ending at North Lake.  The relatively short distance between the begin and end of the loop means a car shuttle can make a point-to-point trip possible.  The route crosses three passes, each of about 12,000 feet (Bishop Pass, Muir Pass, Piute Pass), dropping far down into the deep valleys between each pass.

We plan for 7 days, including 1 layover day. Rain and hail change our planned schedule a bit. Our final backpack has camps at the following locations: Just below Timberline Tarns Lakes (emergency camp due to weather), Little Pete Meadow, Wanda Lake (2 nights), Evolution Meadow, and above Hutchinson Meadow with exit over Piute Pass to North Lake.  The captions to each photo indicate on which segment of our hike the photo was taken.

Day 5 – Wanda Lake to Evolution Meadow

Day 7 – Hutchinson Meadow to North Lake
